Meeting with the Bunenero Women’s group in the milling machine

In July, NAWAD (National Association for Women’s Action in Development) proudly hosted a one-day orientation session with the Bunenero Farmers Group in Mbarara. This session marked an exciting milestone as we introduced the farmers to the innovative plans for the milling machine facility on the Phase III “Women’s Financial Inclusion” project for 2024/25.

A Step Towards Financial Empowerment

In rural communities of Mbarara, women small holder farmers face significant challenges in accessing processing technologies and markets for their agricultural products which are very crucial to improving household income.

The Phase III “Women’s Financial Inclusion” project is focused on increasing the small holder women farmers’ access to processing technologies for value addition and markets for their agricultural products.

The orientation session, held at the heart of Mbarara, aimed to educate and inspire the Bunenero Farmers Group about the upcoming advancements and opportunities presented by the Phase III “Women’s Financial Inclusion” project. This phase is a crucial component of our ongoing commitment to empowering women through financial inclusion and sustainable agricultural practices.

Highlights of the Session

  • Cooperative management skill development: The farmers’ perspective on cooperative management development was expanded and the women small holder farmers were informed about the learning and exposure visits to successful group-owned milling projects in Mbarara and Rubirizi districts that are in the project plan.
  • Community Engagement: The orientation fostered a spirit of community and collaboration. Small holder farmers had the opportunity to share their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, creating a supportive network that will be vital for the project’s success.
  • Orientation of Bunenero Farmers Group: Women small holder farmers in Bunenero Farmers group were provided with the milling facility’s planned activities for the project year 2024/25. They were also informed that NAWAD will visit the milling facility to track its progress and provide any necessary guidance to the group.
  • NAWAD Creates Platform for Women Farmers and Private Sector Partnerships: NAWAD further informed the group that it will facilitate a platform for dialogue between women smallholder farmers and private sector entities. This interaction aims to foster partnerships, improve access to agro-business resources, and enhance capacity building for effective agri-business management, ultimately leading to increased income generation.

Looking Ahead

As we move forward with the Phase III “Women’s Financial Inclusion” project, NAWAD remains dedicated to supporting the women small holder farmers of Bunenero Farmers Group and other women farmers in the region. By providing them with the knowledge and resources they need, we aim to create a sustainable and prosperous future for these hardworking women and their communities.
