1000 Women's Gardens
1000 Women’s Gardens is an organic gardening and women’s economic empowerment program launched in 2021 in Kasese District, Western Uganda. Formerly associated with the Rwenzori Center for Research and Advocacy (RCRA), the program is now partnering with NAWAD to achieve mutual goals and extend its impact nationwide.
The program addresses prevalent issues of food insecurity, malnutrition, climate-related disasters, and gender inequality by supporting women to manage thriving organic vegetable gardens for home consumption and income generation. A key sub-program supports adolescent mothers by addressing the economic, social and reproductive needs of the adolescent and her child(ren).
The program envisions “1,000 thriving organic gardens as a gateway for health, nutrition, and economically strengthened families in the Rwenzori Region by 2028.” The program’s mission is to “enable women’s organic gardens as a gateway to food-secure and climate-resilient families in the Rwenzori Region and beyond.”
ANGA Centre

We work together, through meaningful partnerships, rigorous research, and community-based participatory approaches to address critical challenges facing climate-vulnerable communities.
The Anga Center brings together a uniquely positioned, multi-country team of researchers, government representatives, community leaders, and grassroots organizations who are deeply rooted in and accountable to the communities most affected by climate change and health inequities. Our collective approach is grounded in trust, equity, and shared power.
We combine rigorous research with community-based participatory methods to ensure that the solutions we co-create are not only evidence-informed but also locally led and sustainable. Our track record of fostering meaningful partnerships across sectors and geographies positions us to address the complex, intersectional challenges climate-vulnerable communities face with urgency, integrity, and impact.
Makerere University: College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT)
The National Association for Women’s Action in Development (NAWAD) and Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology (CEDAT) have collaborated extensively on the clean energy transition and research.
Through CEDAT Renewable Energy experts, NAWAD has implemented Clean Cooking Solutions for Bidibidi Refugee Settlement and Enhancing women’s involvement in briquette production and marketing as an alternative clean energy source to charcoal and firewood in Uganda projects. CEDAT, through its renewable experts, has supported NAWAD in designing and developing the gender-inclusive briquette infrastructure, deployment, and training of users.
The College also provides technical support during operation of the deployed briquette infrastructure on selected sites and supported NAWAD during evaluation of impact along the chosen areas of focus. The college experts have also supported NAWAD in conducting a study on alternative raw materials for briquette production and provided data on protocols to be followed in their processing to briquettes of standard qualities for a competitive market place.
